Re: Peaceful Joining Of SSLM/A

Brother James N Reath

I share your prostration, but the SSLM cannot exposed our people to fighting that we cannot afford anymore among ourselves, I read your e-mail message, it is very important to build understanding among ourselves, we all of us are from Nuer people in the Nuerland. we must build the Nuer dignity and pride as people exist in this part of the world, we must not allow misunderstanding among ourselves, led us not be divided by our enemies, they are all around us, I think you know what I am talking about brother.

The SSLM/A was formed with the ambition to restored the credibility that has been lost by our brother Dr Riek Machar leadership, when the Nasir declaration took place the whole South Sudan was supportive to the move, and many people wishes for the a Nuer leadership. Specially people of Equatoria, Bar El Gazel and upper Nile. The International Communities gave a huge supports. The neighbouring Countries Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda, etc.

This International support was completely damaged and thrown away specially when Dr. Riek could not maintained this international expectation. The SPLA vigorously propagated against his leadership and weakness, International community to Regional neighbouring countries dropped because of the SPLA propaganda against us, when we signed the Khartoum agreement we thought we can now developed our people, but as a result Khartoum agreement could not be implemented. we urged Dr Riek Machar to come out to join our forces that were fighting at the oil field in Bentiu. we were told clearly by Dr. Riek, that he will not come out but go ahead to organise our forces that were fighting the government of Sudan at the oilfield. We declared the Upper Nile provisional Military Command Council signed by 16 commanders in Waat, as a result of Waat declaration on the 4th November 1999 and Dr Wal Duany was nominated to lead the new formation unanimously by all commander! s. Dr. Riek was Part of the idea of organising the forces. the political body was declared later on 31st January 2000 after a wider consultation. we thought the SSLM/A formation was to stop the failure of Khartoum Agreement disintegration of our forces. we were in a position to stop the disarray and unwillinglyness of our forces going to SPLA with no choice.

The aim and objective of the move of SSLM/A formation.

  1. to organised the forces that disintegrated from Dr. Riek leadership when he was still inside Sudan with the Government of Khartoum.

  2. to show the world that Nuer can lead the South and organise themselves.

  3. to restored support from South Sudanese brothers and International Communities

  4. to stop Nuer being humiliated and misused by others that you know, and try to tell the world that we the Nuer are not chaotic as others are saying, that we need to tell them, we are honest and governable and can restore our dignity, credibility and honesty.

  5. we reject to the SPLA idea that expect Nuer to line-up and go back to SPLA, when the SPLA has not yet address the inspiration of our south Sudanese objectives up to now, therefore; we believe that the SSLM can still regroup all our forces hand stand up for our true objectives of South Sudan (Wei-Neani-tin chaar).

Concerning Mai-Wut and other places as mentioned in the SSLM press release of February 6, 2002. Brother as far as I am aware there was no fighting to take Mai-Wut or Pagak and other places for that matter the question is to take Mai-Wut from who? our policies cannot do that we are against interfight that was why SSLM was born. What happened, when Dr Riek was in the area for a SPDF conference in order to ask the Nuer people and the forces whether the idea of going back to SPLA was good. the answer was negative, nobody wish for going back to SPLA. They rejected the return to SPLA. That they should remained with SPDF. when Dr. Riek Machar arrived Nairobi, without consultation even with people around him in Nairobi such as Tito Biel Chour, Kuong Danier Gatluak, Kun Puac and others. I spoke to Riek Machar when I was in Germany on 27th December 2001, I asked him that I heard president Moseveni was mediating you and John Garang, he told! me no that was rumour. on the 6th January 2002, he declared merger with John Garang SPLA.

This caught people of Mai-Wut by surprise, Cdr. Tito Biel Chour and Riek personal body guard Captain Marco decided to go to Khartoum. As a result people of Mai-Wut declared their support to SSLM/A under A/cdr Daniel Biel and commissioner Wecyual Chuol supported by chiefs and the white army.

You mentioned about Mai-Wut Pagak or Akoba, I believe they all belong to Nuer people in the Nuerland, we must show to other people everywhere, in the south Sudan that we are capable people and cannot be used but can lead as well like other people, we challenged John Garang in 1991 by the declaration of Nasir move, we are tired of humiliation against our people, who were subjected to discriminate killing like what happened to our people, the Gajaak Nuer and the Anyanya II. The Nasir declaration was to cease such killing and humiliation and to go for a clear objectives of the South.

Brother James N Reath, Please led us build some kind of understanding so that Nuer people are not be humiliated divided again by misunderstanding, all around us to have no friends and it is from nothing, just leadership competition in the South, other people think we could be only there to be used but we will reject to that idea, we must unite to protect ourselves. You mentioned Akoba as my citizens, ... all Nuer people or the South Sudanese are our people. I myself comes from Western Nuer of Western Upper Nile (kuechang-Dok) Dr. Riek Machar Teny is my relative, He is the son of my maternal Uncle. My mother and his father are brothers and sisters, his father is Machar Teny-dhorgun and my mother is Nyaruac Ten-dhorgun, but all and all the important thing is, us as people of the Nuer or South Sudan.

Thanks for your communication, please share this note with our brothers around you and keep in touch.

God Bless you!
Your brother Andrew Kuong Ruay Jany!
